The Kano Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has sadly confirmed the loss of 11 lives in a tragic auto crash in Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State.
The devastating incident occurred on April 19, 2024, around 3:45 PM local time, as reported by CRC AA Labaran, the Sector Public Education Officer of FRSC RS1.2 Kano Sector Command, in a statement released on Saturday.
The crash unfolded at the Gaya Junction along the Kano–Maiduguri road and involved two vehicles: a Toyota hummer bus with registration number KTG 190 XB and a Hijet mini p/up with registration number KTG 501 YG.
Preliminary investigations suggest that over speeding, leading to loss of control, was likely the cause of the accident. Out of the 28 individuals involved, 11 tragically lost their lives, while 16 sustained injuries. Thankfully, one person was rescued unhurt from the wreckage.
The injured victims were promptly transported to Gaya General Hospital for urgent medical care, while those who lost their lives were laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony.
In response to this heart-wrenching incident, the Kano Sector Commander, CC IS Abdullahi, expressed deep sorrow and stressed the critical importance of adhering to road safety rules and regulations. He cautioned drivers against speeding and overloading their vehicles with passengers, animals, or goods.
Additionally, Abdullahi advised commercial drivers to prioritize the installation of speed limit devices on their vehicles to mitigate the risk of accidents resulting from speed limit violations.
The FRSC RS1.2 Kano Sector Command, under the leadership of CC IS Abdullahi, remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding road users. Efforts will be intensified to enforce traffic regulations and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
