In a devastating development that struck the Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) community, two 500 level and one 400 level medical students lost their lives in a fatal auto accident.
The unfortunate incident occurred shortly after they attended the induction ceremony of their senior colleagues.
The heartbreaking crash took place on Thursday evening at the Nunya axis of the Enugu Port Harcourt Expressway, as the students were en route to their base in Aba from the induction ceremony held at the Uturu main campus of the university.
Among those involved in the accident, two additional individuals sustained injuries and were promptly rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia for treatment. Fortunately, they were later discharged after receiving medical care, as their injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.
Confirming the incident, Mr. Chijioke Nwogu, the Public Relations Officer of the university, expressed sorrow over the loss. Similarly, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, the state Commissioner for Health, described the incident as profoundly tragic and visited the hospital to personally check on the injured students.
According to reports, the accident occurred when the students' vehicle, a Toyota Camry, experienced a tyre burst, resulting in the driver losing control and colliding with a tree by the roadside. Regrettably, two of the casualties succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while the third passed away shortly after arrival at the hospital.
The entire ABSU community mourns the loss of these promising young individuals and extends heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones during this difficult time.
