Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, has expressed that Nigeria is not at a stage of development where state police would be viable.
This statement came during a national dialogue on state police, organized by the House of Representatives in Abuja on Monday.
Under the theme of 'Pathways to Peace: Reimagining Policing in Nigeria,' Egbetokun's remarks were delivered by Ben Okolo, an assistant inspector-general of police. He emphasized that while the discussion surrounding state-controlled police is pertinent, Nigeria lacks the necessary maturity for its establishment.
"It is the submission of the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force that Nigeria is yet to mature and ready for the establishment of state-controlled police," Okolo conveyed on behalf of Egbetokun.
It will be recalled that several state governors are agitating for state police in order to curb insecurity in their states.
