In a significant update on national security, the Defence Headquarters reported on Friday that major military operations conducted across Nigeria in January 2025 led to the elimination of 358 terrorists and the arrest of 431 suspects.

These operations also resulted in the rescue of 249 individuals who had been abducted, highlighting the military’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding citizens and maintaining national security.

Targeted Operations in the Niger Delta

A central focus of these operations was the Niger Delta region, where military forces disrupted illegal activities linked to crude oil theft. In a major victory, security personnel successfully prevented oil losses estimated at over ₦2.69 billion. Among the operations’ accomplishments were the dismantling of 16 illegal refinery sites, the destruction of 203 crude oil cooking ovens, 16 dugout pits, and 22 storage tanks. Moreover, over 2.7 million liters of stolen crude oil were recovered, significantly weakening the operations of criminal syndicates engaged in economic sabotage.

Seizing Weapons and Ammunition

The Nigerian military also made impressive strides in curbing the flow of illegal arms. A total of 370 weapons, including 105 AK-47 rifles, 25 locally made firearms, and 4,972 rounds of ammunition, were seized. These recoveries have severely disrupted the operational capacity of terrorist groups and other criminal elements, reducing their ability to carry out attacks and destabilize communities.

National Security on the Rise

These outcomes underline the military’s intensified efforts to protect Nigeria’s economic resources and national stability. As the country continues its fight against terrorism and economic crimes, the latest developments signal a stronger, more resilient defense strategy.
