An unidentified number of individuals may be trapped following the collapse of a five-storey building under construction at Basden Street, Fegge, in the bustling city of Onitsha, Anambra State.

The building, intended for commercial use upon completion, crumbled in the early hours of Sunday, reportedly while some construction workers were on the final floor.

Emergency response efforts swiftly mobilized, with an excavator dispatched to the site for the urgent evacuation of debris and potential rescue operations for any trapped victims.

As of the time of this report on Sunday, one person has been rescued, but the details surrounding the incident remain incomplete. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.

Attempts to verify the situation with the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, proved unsuccessful as he could not be reached for confirmation, failing to respond to inquiries on his telephone.

Similarly, the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, Chinyere Nworah, has yet to respond to inquiries directed to her telephone.

The community anxiously awaits further updates on the ongoing rescue operations and the overall situation at the collapsed building site in Onitsha.
