Yesterday, at least five individuals lost their lives, and twelve others suffered varying degrees of injuries in a tragic accident along the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The collision involved a Mazda bus with the registration number SMK 685 YG and a truck marked ZE 121 0G. The accident occurred some distance away from Foursquare along the highway, leaving a trail of destruction and sorrow.

Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the Ogun Sector Command, officially confirmed the heartbreaking incident to reporters in Abeokuta on Tuesday. Okpe provided details of the accident, pointing out that the driver of the Mazda bus was responsible for the tragedy, having lost control of the vehicle while allegedly falling asleep at the wheel.

"The accident involved a total of 18 individuals, comprising 10 male adults and eight female adults," Okpe explained. "Among them, twelve people sustained injuries, while tragically, five lives were lost due to the crash."

Okpe identified the likely causes of the fatal collision, citing factors such as a tire burst, excessive speed, and driver fatigue. The combination of these elements resulted in the driver losing control, leading to a collision with a moving truck.

In the aftermath of the accident, the injured victims were promptly transported to Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical attention. Meanwhile, the lifeless bodies of the deceased were respectfully deposited at the FOS Morgue in Ipara, marking the somber aftermath of this heartbreaking incident on one of Nigeria's major expressways.
