In a devastating incident that occurred on Thursday, tragedy struck along the Onitsha-Asaba bridgehead as an articulated vehicle plowed into pedestrians, resulting in the death of a yet-to-be-identified female and leaving two others injured.

According to eyewitness reports, the accident was precipitated by brake failure as the vehicle descended the River Niger bridge en route to Asaba. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, careening into pedestrians along the roadside.

Confirming the crash, C. A Iyiegbuniwe, the Staff Officer for Public Education at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, released a statement detailing the incident. "The crash occurred today, April 4, 2024, at about 3:20 hrs along Onitsha-Asaba Bridgehead," said Iyiegbuniwe. "It involved an articulated white and green Mercedes-Benz vehicle with registration number NKE25LG. The vehicle experienced brake failure, leading to the collision with pedestrians. Two individuals sustained injuries, while tragically, one female lost her life."

Upon arriving at the scene, FRSC personnel swiftly transported the injured parties to Toronto Hospital in Onitsha, while the deceased was taken to Toronto Mortuary. Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Sector Commander RS5.3 Awka, extended sympathies to the families of the victims.

In light of this tragic incident, Irelewuyi emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and adherence to traffic regulations. Motorists are urged to prioritize safety measures to prevent such heartbreaking accidents in the future.
