Two teachers from Ibru College, Agbarha-Otor, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr.

Agofure R. and Mr. Etuh G., have been suspended and ordered to clean the staff toilets for a month after engaging in a physical altercation within the school premises.

Strict Disciplinary Measures Enforced

Following the incident, the Delta State government imposed disciplinary actions, suspending both educators and recommending their transfer to different public schools to restore decorum at the institution. The school’s disciplinary committee strongly condemned their actions, describing the fight as a grave violation of professional ethics.

Additionally, the two teachers have been directed to report to the Ughelli Zonal Office of the Delta State Post-Primary Education Board for further questioning regarding the altercation. Pending a final decision from the board, their suspension remains in effect.

One Teacher Ordered to Vacate Official Quarters

Beyond the suspension, Mr. Etuh G. has been instructed to vacate his official residence within the school premises within a month, further emphasizing the severity of the penalties imposed.

School Management Upholds Zero-Tolerance Policy

Confirming the development, the school’s Principal, Mr. Akporube L.O., reaffirmed Ibru College’s commitment to maintaining discipline and professionalism among staff. He emphasized that the institution upholds a strict zero-tolerance policy for misconduct, warning that unethical behavior will not be condoned under any circumstances.

Education Expert Criticizes Teacher Recruitment Process

Reacting to the incident, Dr. Precious Omoruwou, a Senior Lecturer at Southern Delta University, condemned the teachers’ actions, attributing them to flaws in the educator recruitment process. She stressed the need for continuous training and retraining of teachers, underscoring their critical role as role models for students.

Dr. Omoruwou further emphasized that educators must uphold the highest standards of discipline and professionalism, as their conduct directly shapes the values and morals of society.

Public Backlash Against Unruly Teachers

The fight between the teachers has drawn widespread criticism from parents, fellow educators, and the general public. Many have expressed disappointment, arguing that teachers should embody discipline and serve as exemplary figures for students.

With these stringent measures in place, the Delta State government and Ibru College management are sending a clear message: professional misconduct will not be tolerated, and erring educators will be held accountable for their actions.
