Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director, Austin Eguavoen, has refuted claims that he stepped down as interim coach of the Super Eagles following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Eguavoen was appointed to lead the team after the NFF failed to secure German coach Bruno Labbadia due to issues related to stringent German tax laws.
Eguavoen guided the Super Eagles to a 3-0 victory over the Benin Republic in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on September 7, 2024, but the team was later held to a goalless draw by Rwanda in Kigali on September 10. Following the draw, rumors surfaced that Eguavoen had resigned as interim coach. However, the 59-year-old dismissed these reports.
"It's quite unfortunate that people just trigger something that is not correct. The situation we are in now does not need negative stories," Eguavoen said in a media chat upon his arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. He clarified that he had only discussed reviewing the team’s performance with NFF leadership after the two games to plan for the upcoming qualifiers.
Eguavoen affirmed his commitment to the role, stating, "I’m still very much in charge. I’m the Technical Director of the NFF, saddled with the responsibility of taking the Super Eagles at this moment."
