Chelsea tried to equip Mauricio Pochettino with a new striker before the transfer deadline with a last-minute move for Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi.
According to The Athletic, the Blues ultimately failed in their attempt to provide competition for Nicolas Jackson.
Pochettino’s men have picked up just four points from their first four Premier League fixtures.
Last weekend, they lost 1-0 to Forest at Stamford Bridge.
Awoniyi ran Chelsea’s defense ragged that afternoon and provided the assist for Anthony Elanga’s winning goal.
However, it has emerged that Chelsea had contacted Forest 48 hours earlier in an attempt to broker a deal for the Super Eagles star.
Forest instantly rejected Chelsea’s advances, and Pochettino was left to soldier on with just Jackson and Armando Broja.
