A tragic incident unfolded in Oba, Anambra State, when a group of tipper drivers allegedly attacked and killed five operatives of the Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) after running them over with their vehicles.
The SASA task force was created by the Anambra State government to tackle the menace of tout-related activities and maintain order on the state’s roads. However, this incident has brought attention to the dangerous clash between law enforcement and local drivers.
The Fatal Attack in Oba
Eyewitnesses suggest that the attack on the SASA operatives was premeditated and orchestrated, marking a violent escalation in the ongoing tension between law enforcement and certain groups of drivers in the region.
Karen James, the spokesperson for SASA, explained that the squad had gone to the notorious garage in Oba to carry out a routine enforcement operation when the tragic event unfolded.
She emphasized that SASA operatives were not there to disrupt the drivers but to perform their lawful duties. In her statement, she said:
“The area is known to be a hotspot for criminal activities, including armed robbery, drug dealing, and other illicit operations. The SASA team was not attempting to block the drivers but was simply carrying out their responsibilities. Claims of SASA trying to block the tipper drivers on the expressway are a blatant lie.”
The Violent Clash and SASA's Retreat
According to eyewitnesses, the tipper drivers immediately surrounded the SASA operatives, some of whom were reportedly wielding weapons. As the situation quickly became hostile, the SASA officers attempted to retreat to safety. Tragically, they were unable to escape, and five operatives lost their lives in the violent confrontation.
The Ongoing Tension in Oba
This incident highlights the growing tensions between law enforcement and certain factions of the local driving community, particularly in areas like Oba, which have become infamous for illegal activities.
The Special Anti-Touting Squad continues to face increasing challenges as they work to restore order in the state, while questions remain about how this tragic event will impact future operations in Anambra State.
