The Niger State Police Command has apprehended a suspect, Jamilu Saidu, from Kumbashi District in Mariga Local Government Area, for allegedly killing a 30-year-old man, Iliyasu Aminu, during a wedding celebration.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on January 18, 2025, amid the joyous festivities. Tensions flared, leading to an altercation between attendees from two neighboring villages, Yabawa and Ungwar Sarkin-Daji. The fight reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over food served at the wedding.
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the incident, revealing that the altercation quickly escalated into violence. During the clash, Saidu allegedly struck Aminu with a machete, delivering a fatal blow to his head.
"On January 18, 2025, at about 8 p.m., operatives of Bangi Division arrested one Jamilu Saidu of Kumbashi District, Mariga LGA, for the culpable homicide of 30-year-old Iliyasu Aminu from the same area," Abiodun stated.
The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic event, with initial findings pointing to pre-existing tensions between the two villages that boiled over during the wedding celebration.
