One member of the Nigerian Army, identified as Boyi Thankgod, has reportedly taken his own life in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Thankgod was associated with the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, located in the state capital.
According to reports from Daily Trust, the soldier shot himself in the head while on standby duty for Armed Forces Remembrance Day. A graphic image depicts the aftermath of the incident, with Thankgod's lifeless body lying in a pool of blood, his head severed due to the impact of the self-inflicted gunshot.
Confirming the incident, a source within the barracks stated, “Yes, it’s true. The incident happened on Monday.” The source further mentioned that an ongoing investigation aims to uncover the circumstances leading to Thankgod's tragic action.
“The incident truly happened. Since yesterday, the military police have been investigating… all soldiers that were there when the incident happened, they were taken to custody, took their statements, and all the normal procedures,” the source revealed.
While awaiting the conclusion of the military police investigation to determine the factors behind the incident, the spokesperson for the brigade command, Mohammed Goni, was unavailable for comment at the time of filing this report. Similarly, there has been no response from the spokesperson of the Police Command, Omolola Odutola, in relation to the incident.
This heartbreaking event sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals within the armed forces and underscores the need for comprehensive support systems to address mental health issues among military personnel. As investigations unfold, the circumstances surrounding Boyi Thankgod's untimely demise remain a subject of concern and scrutiny.
