The reigning South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Nigeria's champion Bayelsa Queens 2-1 in their opening Group B match of the 2022 CAF Women's Champions League.

Despite controlling the game's play, the Prosperity Girls fell short due to their carelessness in front of goal.

A minute after the hour mark, Lelona Daweti's breathtaking strike gave the South Africans the lead.

Before halftime, Bayelsa Queens attempted to retake the lead but were unable to get past the Sundowns defense.

Domo Okara’s side conceded again in the 57th minute, with Daweti scoring her second of the game for Sundowns.

Mary-Magdalene Anjor reduced the deficit for Bayelsa Queens with 10 minutes to go.

Mamelodi Sundowns held on to win the game despite late pressure from the Nigerians.

Bayelsa Queens will take on TP Mazembe of Congo Democratic Republic in their next game on Thursday.
