Speaking to 'beIN Sports' following Real Madrid's 3-1 defeat to Tottenham in the Champions League on Wednesday, Cristiano Ronaldo was one again asked about his contract situation and this time he gave a surprising response.
The Portguese gave the answer that no-one was expecting, telling the interviewer that he did not wish to renew his contract with 'Los Blancos'.
"I'm happy with things as they are," explained the recent winner of FIFA's 'The Best' award. "Here's to many more years with Real Madrid?" asked journalist Rodrigo Faez, causing Ronaldo to point out that he is already tied to the club until 2021.
"You never know," he replied. "I have four years left on my contract. I don't want to renew. I'm happy with things as they are."
Faez kept digging thoug, asking the Portugal legend "Are you sure?" To which Ronaldo simply replied "I don't want to renew" before ending the interview as he attempted to hold back laughter.
When asked the same question later on, the 32-year-old said that he was "very happy with the contract that I already have."
Ronaldo's comments will no doubt lead to concerns that he does not see himself ending his career at the Bernabeu as many had previously assumed he would do, but with four years still to run on the deal that he signed less than 12 months ago, it is hard to believe that there is any talk of a renewal anyway.
