A devastating road accident on the Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway near Kilometre 3, Sabo in Oyo Town, Sunday evening, resulted in the loss of at least 19 lives.
The collision involved a Sokoto-bound white Toyota HIACE 18-seater bus with registration number NTT 522 ZY and a black Toyota salon car. Tragically, the victims lost their lives on the spot, with only one survivor currently receiving treatment at Opabode Hospital in Oyo.
Joshua Adekanye, the Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), confirmed the incident, attributing it to a disregard for traffic laws.
Adekanye provided further details, stating, “The incident involved a Sokoto-bound commercial bus and Corolla salon car. It happened at 7:45 pm at Kilometre 3, Sabo area along Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway. Out of the 20 passengers on board of the two affected vehicles, 19 died on the spot while the survivor is receiving medical attention at the neighborhood hospital. The corpses of the victims have been deposited at the General Hospital, Oyo. The drivers of the two vehicles were among the victims that died on the spot.”
The FRSC official noted that the deceased driver of the Toyota HIACE was driving in the wrong lane towards Oyo, leading to the collision with the Toyota Corolla salon car.
In light of this tragic incident, Adekanye urged road users to prioritize adherence to traffic rules to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible driving and vigilance on the roads.
