In a devastating turn of events, the Oduigbo section of Ochanja Market in Onitsha South Local Government Area witnessed a tragic building collapse resulting in the loss of five lives.

The incident, reported by Channels Television on Tuesday, prompted an immediate response from the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

Governor Soludo, visibly moved by the situation, visited the scene of the mishap to express his condolences to the victims and their families. Three of the five buildings under construction at the market collapsed on Monday evening, trapping numerous individuals beneath the rubble.

As of now, twenty-six people have been successfully rescued, but the unfortunate toll stands at five fatalities. Governor Soludo, while addressing the crowd, reminded them that he had issued directives ensuring that no shop could be erected in any market in the state without the approval of the Physical Planning Board and his signature.

Expressing his commitment to addressing the root cause of such incidents, Governor Soludo vowed to assist those affected by the disaster. He emphasized the need to curtail impunity and cautioned developers against constructing without an approved plan.

In response to the recklessness of the contractor involved, Governor Soludo announced that, in addition to facing legal consequences, the contractor would be obligated to bear the cost of removing the rubble. The governor pledged to collaborate with relevant authorities to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and affirmed that his administration would assess all markets in the state. He issued a warning that illegal structures in various locations, including Ose and Ogbo-Ogwu, would be subject to demolition.

Despite ongoing efforts to rescue those trapped under the rubble, the emergency responders are tirelessly working to extract survivors and recover remains from the collapsed building. The tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of adhering to approved plans and regulations in construction projects, as well as the need for stringent measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
