The Kano State Police Command has arrested three individuals in possession of counterfeit currencies totalling a staggering N129,542,826,000.
The currencies, which included US dollars, CFA francs, and naira, were reportedly stolen from another dealer before being recovered.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday, stating that the suspects are assisting the police in uncovering the producers of the counterfeit money. Among those arrested were two individuals found with the fake currencies and another person from whom the money was allegedly stolen.
The police also seized a variety of items during their operations, including six live ammunition, three tricycles, eight motorcycles, and three parcels containing 175 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Additionally, the command recovered 250 diazepam tablets, 278 sheep, and seven cattle in connection with other criminal activities.
“These approaches have resulted not only in the apprehension of criminals but also deterred potential offenders from engaging in criminal activities,” Haruna stated.
Further breakdowns revealed that the counterfeit currencies included $3,366,000, CFA51,970,000, and N1,443,000.
SP Haruna noted that the police’s proactive measures have significantly curtailed major crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, thuggery, and drug trafficking in Kano State. Investigations are ongoing to bring those behind the counterfeit operation to justice.
